Summer Camping Season:
5 Tips for RVing in Hot, Humid Weather in Central PA

Summer is here, and with it comes the excitement of long, sunny days and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. At Lerch RV, we want to ensure your summer camping experience is as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. While the warmth is welcome, the hot and humid weather can present some challenges for RVers. Here are five things you need to know about camping in these conditions to ensure you stay cool and have a fantastic time while making great camping memories all Summer.
1. Understand Your RV’s Cooling Limitations
When the mercury rises, your RV’s air conditioning system works overtime to keep the interior comfortable. However, even the best RV AC units have their limitations. Pay close attention to your RV’s shore power and the capacity of your AC units. Using a generator can help, but ensure it’s powerful enough to support the additional load. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing air filters, can improve efficiency. Remember to use reflective shades or thermal curtains on your windows to block out the intense sun and help your AC do its job more effectively.
2. Monitor Your RV Refrigerator
RV refrigerators can struggle to maintain their cool in extreme temperatures. These appliances are less efficient than household fridges, especially in the sweltering heat. To help them out, park your RV in the shade whenever possible and consider using a small fan to improve air circulation around the refrigerator’s vents. Stocking the fridge with pre-cooled items and avoiding frequent door openings can keep the temperature stable.
3. Tankless Water Heaters and Groundwater Temperatures
Tankless RV water heaters are a great feature, but they can be affected by the groundwater temperature. In hot weather, groundwater can be warmer than usual, which may affect the performance of your water heater. Adjusting the temperature settings slightly can help maintain a comfortable water temperature for showers and washing dishes. In general, RV tankless water heaters work best when used with a consistent RV water pressure and when setting the thermostat to a comfortable temperature for showering. This number should be set to a comfortable temperature without using any cold water, which causes the water temperature to be inconsistent.
4. Small Changes for Big Differences
A few minor adjustments can significantly impact your comfort. Invest in quality insulation for your RV, including door and window seals, to keep cool air in and hot air out. Use fans to enhance air circulation inside your RV. Cooking outside instead of inside can prevent additional heat buildup. Simple hacks like these can make a big difference in managing the heat. In an RV such as a fifth wheel, the furnace cold air return is usually located under the steps leading to the front of the trailer. During the heat of the Summer, warm air from the underbelly and the storage compartment can feed back into the main living area. Some RVers temporarily close this vent area off, keeping the cool air in the living area of the RV from being wasted in the storage compartments.
5. Towing and Storage Considerations in Hot Weather
When towing your RV in hot weather, ensure your vehicle’s cooling system is up to the task. Overheating engines is a common problem in high temperatures, so keep an eye on your gauges and ensure your coolant levels are sufficient. Find a shaded spot or use an RV cover to protect your vehicle from the sun’s harsh rays for storage. The sun can cause wear and tear on your RV’s exterior and interior, leading to fading, cracking, and other damage over time. Remember, your RV hates the sun.
